Ever had that day trying to turn the perfect pen and you just can’t get it right?
Days ahead:
I poured my pen blank and had a great looking mix of blue, gold, and copper. It was shiny (distracted easily I am). I was thinking how great it would look turned, sanded, and polished on my Metro Fountain Pen Kit. I was generally excited. Once it was cured I cut it down to size, sanded the pen tube, glued it up and let it dry over night.
The turning day:
I was ready to go. I prepared my shop, got everything in order. Keyed up the blank and I was off. I turned down the edges to round and checked everything. It was really starting to look like a great pen blank I had created. Then I switched tools from my roughing gouge to my carbide square. It was cutting great, but I was impatient and wanted to get it done. I switched back to the roughing gouge to take a little more off. Thats when I made that critical mistake. I pushed too hard trying to get the ends down to size. I heard it first, then got hit in the face with a piece of beautiful pen blank. I looked down and saw a brass color no pen turner wants to see. I knew it was my fault, but was looking for anything else to blame…It just wasn’t my day.
